Google has announced the launch of a brand new artificial intelligence (AI) tool it is calling ‘Ask For Me’.
The new AI experiment from Google’s Search Labs will allow search users to task Google AI with calling businesses on their behalf when they want to find out about a company’s services and prices.
A Google user may use the Ask For Me tool to find out when they can receive, for example, an oil change from a mechanic in the local area. After selecting the service they wish to find out about, Google’s AI will call relevant businesses to find accurate answers to users’ questions.
A spokesperson from Google has said the new feature is currently being trialled using mechanics and nail salon businesses. As it’s only in the experimental phase, it’s not known whether the tool will be rolled out fully across Google Search in all countries.
However, business owners worried about being forced to take random calls from Google’s AI on a weekly or daily basis need not worry. Businesses will have the ability to opt out of receiving calls from Google for this purpose. Furthermore, Google will clearly disclose the purpose of the call from the outset.
Not all business owners will be interested in receiving a phone call from Google about their prices and services. In fact, many would prefer for customers to have as much information on these topics as possible simply by finding the business online.
