According to a recent survey, even more small and medium enterprises are turning to social media as one of the main strategies in their global search engine optimisation campaigns. The survey was carried out by SocialMediopolis.com, which is a website for marketers utilising social media. The website’s publisher Michael Crosson states that it is commonly believed that large corporations are behind the growth of social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest, but successful marketing campaigns incorporating social media are being driven by small and medium businesses.
According to Crosson, one of the main social media sites behind the increase in SMEs using social media for marketing is LinkedIn, which now has more than 200,000,000 members. He said:
“We have seen a significant increase in companies from one to 100 joining the social media marketing group over the previous year.
“More importantly, these companies have expanded their use of social media into other services besides Facebook and Twitter. We have seen incredibly strong growth in Pinterest, Instagram, Google+ and Tumblr, for example.”
Most of the responses to the survey were from small and medium enterprises with up to 100 employees and independent consultants, making up 80.4 per cent of the responses. Although use of Twitter, Google+, Facebook and other social media sites was evenly spread, MySpace remains behind with only four per cent.
Social media plays an important role in the SEO campaign of a business and is usually fine tuned as new trends develop along with changes in the algorithms used by search engines.
