Human vs AI

How your business can survive judgement by AI

Something’s changing in how people find businesses, and a lot of it comes down to how AI (artificial intelligence) tools are behaving.

They’re not just showing lists of websites anymore – they’re making suggestions. If someone asks for a recommendation, the AI isn’t thinking, “what ranks highest?” It’s thinking, “what can I suggest without being wrong?”

That’s a very different question.

Because of this, a lot of the usual SEO (search engine optimisation) tactics don’t carry the same weight on their own. You can have a well-optimised site, plenty of keywords, decent traffic… and still not get mentioned.

The reason is simple. If your business isn’t clear or consistent, it’s hard for AI to “trust” it. Trust, in this context, isn’t anything abstract – it’s just about how easy you are to figure out.

If your website says one thing, your LinkedIn says another and your reviews don’t really back it up, it creates friction. Not necessarily for a human, as people are used to piecing things together, but for AI, that uncertainty is enough to move on to the next option.

On the other hand, the businesses that do get picked tend to be the ones that are straightforward. This means you can quickly tell what they do, who they’re for and why someone would choose them. There’s enough evidence around them (such as reviews, mentions and consistent messaging) that lines up without much effort.

It’s less about being the “best” and more about being the easiest to validate.

Something that stands out is how cautious these systems are. If there’s any doubt, they’d rather leave a business out entirely than risk recommending the wrong one. That’s a big shift from search engines, where you could still show up somewhere on page one even if things weren’t perfect.

For business owners, this isn’t really about chasing a new tactic. It’s more about tightening things up.

Make sure what you say is consistent. Make sure there’s proof behind it. Make it easy for someone – or something – to quickly understand what you’re about. Because right now, this seems to be the difference between being visible… and being ignored.
