If a business only posts when someone remembers, social media can quickly become either an afterthought or a last-minute scramble for ideas.
Post too little and your audience may forget you are there. Post too often without anything useful to say and people may start to tune you out.
This is why the better question is not how often every business should post, but how often your business can post something useful. A restaurant, solicitor and online clothing shop will all use social media in different ways, so their ideal posting schedules are unlikely to look the same.
The platform is important too. On LinkedIn, a few posts each week may be plenty. Instagram businesses might post a little more often, especially if they have plenty of photos or videos to share. X tends to move faster, so posting several times in a day can be more common there.
For most small businesses though, the exact number probably isn’t what they need to worry about. If you can manage three decent posts a week, start there.
There’s no point deciding that you must post every day if, by Thursday, you are staring at the screen wondering what on earth to say. This is usually when businesses start putting out filler posts just to keep the page active.
You probably already have more ideas than you think anyway. What have customers asked you this week? Have you finished a job you can show? Has something changed in your industry? Is there a mistake you regularly see people making? Even a quick photo from a normal working day can make a perfectly good post if there is something useful to say alongside it.
It is worth checking what people actually respond to as well. You may find that simple posts from behind the scenes get more attention than the polished graphics you spent ages creating.
Your social media schedule doesn’t need to be complicated. Pick a posting frequency you can realistically keep up with, pay attention to what gets a response and change approaches as you go. Three useful posts a week will usually do more for your business than seven posts published simply because you felt you had to.
