Google is testing a new programme that could influence how websites are used within AI-powered search experiences.
The trial looks at how content from online publishers contributes to AI (artificial intelligence)-generated answers and highlights the increasing importance of creating useful, trustworthy content that search engines and AI tools can understand.
According to reports, the trial is being run through Google Search Console. Many website owners already use this platform to measure their content’s performance on the search engine. Google confirmed its project is in its early stages, currently only being tested with a limited number of publishers.
The new system focuses on content used by Google’s AI products. These include Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Publishers will be eligible to receive payments when an AI-generated answer is significant aided by its content. Google says the goal is to reward the websites that are providing high-quality information for its AI responses.
The payments are linked to the creation of AI answers rather than what happens afterward. Content that helps shape an answer during the generation process may qualify for payment.
One issue raised by publishers is the lack of detail about how payments are calculated. Reports suggest the system currently provides little information about why certain amounts are earned. While publishers can see payment figures, they can’t view the exact data behind those calculations.
Industry experts believe the test could have wider implications for the relationship between technology companies and content creators. In the past, Google has made separate agreements with some news organizations. This new approach could make payments available to a much broader range of websites.
At the same time, some publishers worry that accepting small payments now could weaken their ability to negotiate better deals in the future.
Google has been quick to clarify that the program is only a pilot. It remains unclear whether the test will expand to more publishers or become a permanent feature.
For now, the project offers a glimpse into how AI companies may compensate content creators as artificial intelligence becomes a larger part of the online search experience.
