Google is making some significant changes to how Search works across Europe, and for businesses that rely on organic visibility, local search and direct bookings, it’s another reminder that the digital landscape never stays still for long.
The changes are being introduced as Google adapts its search results to meet requirements under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). One of the key concerns raised by regulators is how prominently Google’s own services and features appear compared with third-party platforms.
As a result, some of the familiar “rich” search features Europeans have become used to are being scaled back. This includes tools showing live prices, availability and direct booking options for hotels, flights, restaurants and other local services.
Instead, users may now see more comparison websites and booking platforms appearing prominently in search results.
In other words, the route from “I need a hotel” to “booked!” could involve a few more clicks than before. Search journeys may be getting a little more scenic.
Google has said that testing suggests these changes can create extra friction for users, while businesses may also see fewer people travelling directly from search results to their websites. The company has previously reported that earlier DMA-related changes led to a reduction in free direct-booking traffic for some European hotels and businesses.
For marketers and business owners, the important takeaway isn’t to panic every time Google moves the furniture around. It’s to make sure your digital marketing strategy doesn’t depend on one feature, one ranking position or one source of traffic.
Strong SEO (search engine optimisation), useful content, an optimised website, effective paid campaigns, local search visibility and a recognisable brand all become even more important when search results change. As anyone working in digital marketing knows, change is pretty much the only thing Google consistently ranks number one for.
If keeping up with algorithm updates, regulations and changing search features is starting to feel like a full-time job, that’s where working with an experienced digital marketing agency can help. At Engage Web, we navigate these changes every day, helping businesses adapt their SEO and digital marketing strategies so they can keep reaching the right people, whatever Google throws into the search results next.
