Google launches service for charities across England and Wales

Google for Nonprofits – a services that gives charities access products from the web giant that businesses pay to use – has been launched for organisations based in England and Wales.

While the programme was first launched in 2011, this marks the first time the service has been made available outside the US.

Speaking about the new service, Google UK’s managing director, Dan Cobley, explained that Google wants to support what he called the “incredible work” undertaken by charities all over the UK by getting rid of the various technical obstacles and costs they face.

He added that Google hopes its technology will aid them in improving operations, increasing donor numbers and raising general awareness of their causes.

While many charities do already engage with users via newsfeeds on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, it is believed that some – particularly smaller organisations – could be held back by a lack of expertise.

By signing up to the programme, charities can access a number of Google products free of charge – including Google Apps, an online collaboration and communication tool comprising Google Talk, Gmail, Drive and Hangouts. Participating charities will also receive more than £6,500 every month in credit for advertising on Google AdWords, which could help some reach out to additional donors.

Premium features on Google Earth Outreach and YouTube will also be available for organisations – both of which a charity could use to further publicise a cause.

A number of other resources will also be on offer with Google for Nonprofits. This includes educational video content and advice on how to better connect and collaborate with other non-profit organisations, as well as how other non-profits are effectively using Google tools. There will also be a forum set up to answer questions on any technical issues.
