Google Chrome closing the gap with Microsoft Internet Explorer

Google Chrome closing the gap with Microsoft Internet Explorer

Although Google Chrome was only introduced in December 2008, the browser has already overtaken Firefox as its share of the global market has increased to 25.7 percent, exceeding the 25.2 percent share for Firefox. Although Microsoft Internet Explorer is still the market leader with 40.6 percent, experts believe that Google is rapidly closing the gap.

The chief executive of StatCounter, Aodhan Cullen said:

“Our stats measure actual browser usage, not downloads, so while Chrome has been highly effective in ensuring downloads our stats show that people are actually using it to access the web also.”

The figures provided by StatCounter show that in the UK Microsoft Internet Explorer is used by 42.8 percent of users, a reduction compared to August’s figure of 45 percent. The figures for the United States show that Google Chrome has only a 17.3 percent share of the market, while Firefox is still ahead with 20.1 percent. Microsoft has an even larger share of the US market, with 50.7 percent.

Google Chrome has only been a competitor in the browser wars for three years, but success appears to be due in part to advertising and promotion on the home page of Google search. The speed of Google Chrome software is also seen as an advantage over the competing browsers. Improvements are being made by all the web browsers, which will affect the operation of many websites.

Whether users are in Los Angeles or Liverpool, effective search engine optimisation is crucial for a business to maintain visibility to users.
