Google announces expansion of AI features

Google has announced a brand new feature called AI Mode, designed to offer search users more detailed, insightful results to their queries – all in the form of an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot.

Furthermore, it has announced an expansion for its AI Overview feature. Both features will be powered by Gemini 2.0, the company’s latest and most advanced AI model.

AI Mode, unlike AI Overview, will function purely as a chatbot, with an interface much removed from a standard Google search screen. Therefore, it will be closer in appearance to many of its main competitors in the AI chatbot space, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

As well as aiding with searches on Google, AI Mode will also be equipped with Google’s information systems relating to weather, stock markets and shopping data, which is currently not available through AI Overview.

However, Google has warned that AI Mode may not be 100% correct for all users right away. In a blog post, the company stated:

“As with any early-stage AI product, we won’t always get it right. For example, while we aim for AI responses in Search to present information objectively based on what’s available on the web, it’s possible that some responses may unintentionally appear to take on a persona or reflect a particular opinion.”

Google has previously come under fire for inaccuracies in its AI features, most notably with AI Overview.

It’s yet to be seen what impact Google’s new AI feature may have on the way your website will appear in search results. However, at Engage Web, we always remain informed and cater our search engine optimisation (SEO) services to the ever-changing demands of Google. Reach out to our team now to get more success online.
