Twitter tests Professional Profiles for businesses

Social media giant Twitter is testing out a new feature called Professional Profiles, in which businesses will be able to access specific features and tools for work-related use.

Anyone who uses the platform for work – be that a business, charity, creator or publisher, for example – will be able to use this new profile type. With a professional profile, a business will be able to include more information, such as contact information and an address, to its profile, along with having a layout that sets it apart from the profiles of personal accounts.

Twitter made the announcement via a thread of tweets on its @TwitterBusiness profile last week:

As reported by Social Media Today, the social network previewed an example profile in early March, and it appears that some features, such as business categories and business badges, haven’t made the cut – as of yet, at least. The features that have been added will likely help to distinguish businesses from the sea of ordinary Twitter profiles and will make it easier for customers to get in touch.

Twitter announced that the Professional Profile testing is to be carried out by a select number of US businesses, with more accounts set to gain access in the months to come. The news appears to have been met with a positive response on the whole, with some users comparing it to LinkedIn:

At the moment, it’s not known what other features or benefits will come with a Professional Profile. Twitter did announce back in March that it was looking at bringing in ecommerce options to its platform, so this may well be a feature that gets tied in with these new profiles. Whatever’s in store, if testing goes to plan, it’s not likely to be long before businesses on this side of the pond can make the switch to the new profile type and discover the benefits for themselves.
