Brits addicted to social media

    Posted on August 21, 2015

According to the latest report from Ofcom, the British public is addicted to using social media. Not only that, our social presence is now synonymous with mobile phones, as most popular apps all belong to the networking genre.

The report from Ofcom revealed that 72% of the British adult population had at least one social media account set up. Facebook remained the most popular platform amongst UK adults, with a staggering 86% of those with an online profile using the social networking site. Interestingly, the next most popular site was Twitter, with only 46% of British social media users having an account.

Unsurprisingly, the age category using social media the most is those aged between 16 and 24. Ofcom’s statistics show that within this group, 93% of the population have at least one account registered with a social networking site. This age range also has the most extensive variety of accounts, and is leading the way in terms of adopting the newer generation of social media sites, including Vine, Snapchat, and Instagram.

As our fondness for these accounts continues to grow, so does the amount of time we spend on them. In March 2015, British visitors to Facebook spent a total 51 billion minutes on the network across a range of devices, including laptop and mobile. This is compared to 34 billion minutes on all of Google’s products. This is certainly an astounding statistic and one that would confirm that Brits are addicted to social media.

The report suggests that 20% of UK Facebook users check their news feeds at least 10 times a day, with a further 39% checking somewhere between 2 and 10 times. Furthermore, the study shows that two fifths (41%) of users aged between 16 and 24 actively state that they are hooked on social media.

As these statistics would suggest, social media is becoming an important part of the daily routine for many Brits. This means that it is important for businesses to integrate it into their marketing strategies as it could lead to more business.
