What are context hints for ChatGPT Ads?

If you’re thinking about running paid ads on ChatGPT, you may have come across the term “context hints”.

Put simply, context hints are designed to help ChatGPT understand the types of conversations your product or service might be relevant to.

Rather than focusing on one keyword, context hints give ChatGPT more information about what someone might be asking, trying to do or looking for help with that could make your advert relevant to the conversation.

The more relevant an advert is to the conversation someone is having with the AI, the more useful it is likely to be to that person and the more likely it is that they will click through.

For example, a shoe retailer could use a broad context hint, such as “running shoes”. However, something more specific, such as “running shoes for beginners training for their first 5k”, gives ChatGPT more information about where the advert could be most relevant and useful.

This is one of the main differences between context hints and traditional keywords. Context hints are less about matching a specific phrase and more about helping ChatGPT understand the types of conversations where your advert could make sense.

Context hints don’t mean your advert will appear every time someone discusses that subject. It is simply a piece of information used to decide whether an advert may be relevant to a particular conversation.

What should you include in a context hint?

The ideal context hint should help explain who your product is for and when they might need it.

For example, a business selling storage boxes could use context hints relating to people moving house, looking for ways to store seasonal clothing, or ways to organise a cluttered room.

These context hints give ChatGPT more useful information regarding the types of conversations this advert could appear in, rather than using a broad phrase such as “storage boxes”.

Typical things to consider when deciding on your context hints can include:

  • The reason why someone might be looking for your product or service
  • Who the product or service is designed for
  • The situation in which it might be useful
  • The problem that your product or service helps to solve.

The main thing to remember is not to simply focus on what you do or sell.

Instead, think about the situations in which somebody might need it and what they might be talking about when that need arises.
