YouTube introduces new comment filters for creators

Posted on October 2, 2019

Creators of YouTube videos may find it easier to sift through the comments on their uploads, with the help of new filters on the video sharing site.

With videos that attract high levels of engagement, finding a specific comment on a YouTube video can be a challenge, with the site only allowing them to be sorted by rating (the number of ‘thumbs up’ they have received) or age. Now, the Google-owned site has responded to requests from creators by allowing comments to be filtered according to a range of metrics.

YouTube announced this new tool in a blog post on the Google Support website, and it may be of particular interest to those who like to reply to every comment on their videos, as comments can now be filtered so that only those that haven’t yet had a response appear.

It is also possible to filter out any comments that don’t contain a question, which may be useful for YouTubers who want to ignore general feedback but want to engage with anyone who enquires about the video. Other filters allow creators to sort comments according to who is making them, such as by the commenters’ subscriber counts, or to display only comments posted by subscribers.

Currently, this facility is only available in desktop mode, and can be found in the YouTube Studio. Click the ‘comments’ tab, and the filter can be seen at the top of the screen.

It’s important to remember that video campaigns need to extend beyond simply shooting a video and uploading it onto YouTube. To increase engagement, be sure to share them on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and keep an eye on any comments they are receiving. Notifications can be set up on the respective platforms to make sure you don’t miss any.
