You need to ‘Polish’ your SEO

Posted on February 5, 2013

Figures released from the 2011 Census have revealed that more than eight million people living in England speak a foreign tongue as their first language.

The results show that Polish is the second most common language in the country, with 546,000 speakers.

This is just about 1% of the population but, together with other widely spoken languages, just under 8% are non-native speakers.

This all raises an interesting question for firms in Britain, most notably in regards to how best to deliver SEO strategies. Clearly, those firms with a diverse cultural customer base should be thinking that English-written content is not be the only way forward.

This is certainly the case for locally targeted businesses.

In and around Liverpool for example, Polish, Urdu and Punjabi are the second, third and fourth most common languages. However, Gujurati and Bengali are also readily spoken as a first tongue.

As such, companies here really need to understand how they could boost their image and awareness by communicating in a whole mix of languages online.

Understanding the different cultures, including festival celebrations, could also prove beneficial; particularly for tying in advertising campaigns and promotions. The clever use of tailored search engine optimisation is proven to deliver results after all.

Whilst building web pages and creating content in different languages will be a worthy move, it is also important to note that only 0.27% of the population claim they cannot speak English at all.

However, this does account for nearly 140,000 people and it is likely this figure is significantly higher; with many non-English speakers likely to have not completed the Census in the first place.
