World Cup and boy bands amongst most tweeted subjects in 2014

Posted on December 12, 2014

With the year drawing to an end, some have analysed what has been discussed on Twitter over the last 12 months, revealing a number of interesting details.

For example, it was found that the word ‘selfie’ was posted to users’ news feeds around 92 million times, which is a 500% increase on its usage in 2013. This has led some commentators to already dub 2014 ‘the year of the selfie’.

However, the most retweeted British post this year was one by Harry Styles of pop group One Direction, which celebrated the boy band’s four years together. Also, the five members of the group each have one of the most followed accounts on Twitter, with millions of followers each.

Oddly enough, Styles’ account actually has more people subscribing than the band’s own handle, with the profiles coming in first and second respectively on the list of UK accounts.

This summer’s FIFA World Cup was the most tweeted about event in Britain, as well as globally. Specifically, UK tweeters particularly enjoyed posting to news feeds about Germany’s 7-1 triumph over Brazil, which took the top spot.

In fact, despite a poor performance by England in the football tournament, which was the only home nation in the competition, World Cup matches formed six of the top ten most tweeted about events in Britain.

In terms of news events, UK tweeters mostly discussed the disappearance of MH370, the Malaysian Airlines flight, as well as the Scottish Independence referendum.
