WordPress named world’s most popular CMS

Newly released data has revealed that content management system (CMS) WordPress is now being utilised by a total of 39.5% of the world’s websites, and is the most popular CMS.

This data was revealed by W3Techs, a company that tracks statistics on the usage of web-based technologies, including CMS, hosting providers and operating systems. The new figure of 39.5% sites being powered by WordPress represents a 4.5% increase on the number powered by the platform in 2020, which stood at 35% of all sites on the web. Considering that 38.3% of sites do not use a CMS at all, this is a significant number, and WordPress powers nearly two thirds (64.1%) of sites that do use a CMS.

In comparison, the second most popular CMS, Shopify, only powers a mere 3.2% of sites. Perhaps surprising to some, while the Shopify platform has been specifically designed for ecommerce purposes, WordPress also holds the title of being the most popular CMS for ecommerce sites.

Many people believe that WordPress is just for blogging, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Site owners have a vast wealth of plugins at their disposal that can be used to turn their sites into practically anything. For example, the WooCommerce plugin, which is a WordPress exclusive, is used by 4.9% of all the world’s websites. It also powers more than 28.19% of online stores, and with a usage distribution of 68%, it’s also the most popular plugin on the internet. This all indicates that WordPress is not to be underestimated.

WordPress is also a leader in user experience, security, speed, usability on mobiles and in search engine optimisation (SEO). Some of the other frequently heard names in the CMS world include Wix and Squarespace – but are they actually all that popular? Data from W3Techs suggests otherwise – Wix is the fifth most popular CMS and Squareplace the 6th, both scoring a mere 1.5%.

At Engage Web, it comes as no surprise that WordPress is the most popular CMS, and it’s certainly our preference when building sites for our clients.
