Why do so many SEO job seekers fail with the basics?

Posted on February 5, 2012

An article appeared on Search Engine Journal this week, aiming to help those seeking a job at an SEO agency perform well at interview. The article focused on asking some well respected names in the world of search, to give their favourite interview questions.

Reading the piece, what first became apparent was the poor answers some of these people gave. No names will be mentioned, but some of the responses were nothing more than standard questions often asked at any interview be it for an office administrator, sales rep, or indeed an SEO executive.

There were a couple of very good points raised however.

One respondent to the questionnaire said he liked to ask interviewees to explain how search engines work. Saying he would look for how they described each part of a search engine, from the servers through the crawlers and onto the links; it was indicative of their wide knowledge and understanding.

There were no details given in the piece as to the worst answers given, though we can all have our own thoughts about this. However, it is likely that many have made a complete hash of things and failure to explain the basics of what their career relies upon will be condemning.

Another good question asked candidates what SEO tool they would like to see, which again requires an explanation of their craft. Such questions are very challenging and worthy to ask but, the question remains why so many candidates are going into these interviews seemingly without the first idea of the basics.
