What is rendering and how can it affect your SEO?

In a recent webinar run by Duda, Google’s Martin Splitt explained how Google indexes a website, from discovering the website to ranking it in search results.

When Google is indexing your site, it will render it so that the robot will be able to understand what your website is about. Any issues in rendering your site will have a search engine optimisation (SEO) impact, affecting how your website ranks.

What is rendering?

Rendering is when Google’s bots process your website, from first finding the pages on your site to assessing the quality of its content and analysing its layout.

Will rendering SEO help to improve my website rankings?

When asked a question about rendering SEO, Splitt said that generally it wouldn’t help with rankings, but if Google encounters any issues when rendering your site and your content doesn’t show up, Google won’t be able to crawl the content. This can cause the page not to be indexed, or it may still index but might not rank for the important content.

This underlines the importance of making sure the website renders properly when search engines crawl it, and that any issues need to be fixed if you hope to get results with the content on your site.

Splitt added that bandwidth can be an issue during crawling. For example, if you had a new site go live and you have thousands of pages, it’s unlikely Google will crawl all the URLs as it could crash the website’s server. Therefore, if you have a new site with many pages, it could take a while for all the content to be indexed on Google.
