Website content mistake proves costly for London university

A university in London has been forced into a fee reduction for its 2012 intake of social work studies, following a mistake on its website.

Kingston University has admitted to publishing the wrong information about fees, following complaints from students who went on to receive higher than expected invoices. The course affected was the university’s Master’s social work course.

According to one student, the original quote for a two-year course was £7,100. However, invoices which were sent in December put the price at £3,000 per term. With many of the cohort intending to take the course rearranging finances according to the information, there was a great deal of concern caused.

It is not known how many of the intake subsequently decided they could not afford the fees, as many applied only under the belief the cost would be covered by their NHS bursary. However, the university has now committed to providing the course at the bursary level.

This puts the cost for the 2012 – 2013 course at £3,828. Students joining the course for the start of the 2013 – 2014 course will be required to meet a £5,700 cost.
