Video game racks up almost one million social media mentions

Posts on various social media platforms have referenced the latest release in the vastly successful Call of Duty computer game series just short of one million times, recent research has found.

According to social media analysts Crimson Hexagon, more than 994,000 tweets, posts and shares across the web’s top social networking sites have in some way referred to Call of Duty: Ghosts, which was released today for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 home consoles, as well as for the Wii U and Windows.

Using its ForSight tool, which utilises an advanced model of data visualisation to chart consumer sentiment across social platforms, Crimson Hexagon found that, of all those who discussed the game in the build-up to its release, 30% were reportedly ‘very excited’.

Of this portion of consumers, just over two thirds displayed a general excitement while almost a third stated a wish to purchase the game upon its release.

The research also showed that around 15% of those discussing Call of Duty: Ghosts talked about features of the new game and its controls.

Furthermore, 22% of users discussed the fact that the game has the series’ first female character, with 23% talking about enjoying the game’s trailer, which stars US actress Megan Fox. Just over one in ten (11%) users commented on the trailer’s use of an Eminem song.

As certain topics trend on social platforms and users engage with one another to discuss new releases in the game, film and tech industries, it pays for brands’ internet marketing specialists to be to be aware of what their followers are saying on their news feeds. For websites, this is one of the best ways to improve engagement and, ultimately, increase site traffic.
