US middle school welcomes back students with spelling error

An American middle school in Dallas, Georgia has become the subject of ridicule on social media after welcoming back students with a large sign bearing the message:

“Welcome back students. We are glad you are hear.”

The error, which was reportedly put up by a school custodian trying to be kind, was rapidly noticed and corrected by staff at the school. Unfortunately for the school, many students and alumni had already seen the sign and shared photographs of it over social media. Many other users then commented on the photo, most of them criticising or ridiculing the school for making the mistake.

When asked to comment by Yahoo Parenting, Suzanne Wooley, the director of communications for Paulding County School District, said the sign was not even up for an hour before being corrected. Wooley expressed regret at the incident but said it was a simple mistake that anyone could make while in a rush. She summed up the incident by saying:

“And this shows how important it is to proofread what you’re writing.”

Words like ‘here’ and ‘hear’ are called homophones, because they’re pronounced the same but have different spellings and meanings. Many people make similar mistakes when writing, although they’re usually not so prominently placed.

Mistakes such as this are why it’s essential to have content proofread by someone suitably qualified before publishing it on a website news feed. You may be tempted to proofread your own content, but think again, because the human mind has a tendency to repeatedly fall into the same traps.
