Twitter trends influencing Bing results?

Bing has been very open in the past about how people and social statistics can have a big impact on the search results but recently noticed something a bit more than this. Carrying out a search using Bing, claims to have discovered that Twitter trends have an influence on the search results displayed.

The search was carried out for Pepsi NEXT, the new mid-calories soft drink from the drinks giant was getting a lot of attention and interest at the time. Under the relevant news articles, was an article about the company, from advertising magazine, AdAge, that had been trending. The article link was accompanied by the extremely recognisable Twitter logo, the trending button and even the number of shares the article had.

An article like this making its way to the top of the search results, and including information such as how many shares it has, has got those in the world of SEO interested and considering the potentials. Will Bing be displaying highly shared links at the top of its search results from now on? For example, if an event in Liverpool was searched on, would it be articles that had been trending the most, that would appear at the top of the search results?

It is known sites like Twitter play a role in search engine optimisation, but enabling sites to gain access to the top spots in the search results is quite a new thing and will be something a lot of people will be watching from now on.

Bing renewed its deal with Twitter in September of last year, and also works with Facebook, whilst Google only uses social data from Google+.
