Twitter serves up Wimbledon hashtag emoji

Posted on June 29, 2015

Social networking site Twitter has announced a new set of hashtag emoji to mark the start of this year’s tennis grand slam tournament, Wimbledon, which starts today.

These expressive icons were revealed via the timeline of five-time champion and ladies’ world number one Serena Williams.

Twitter’s latest announcement comes as part of a strategy to get fans of the internationally renowned tournament engaging with the social media site during play, with the company hoping to create a “friendly battle of conversation” between fans.

At present, there are four hashtag emoji to choose from, with #Wimbledon bringing up a tennis racquet icon. Other hashtags #TheQueue, #TheHill and #TheWorld are also currently available for use, and it is believed that more will be introduced as the tournament progresses.

The social network, which has become one of the important platforms for many companies in terms of their internet marketing strategies, realised that live sporting events are still one area where it has the advantage over competitors, including Facebook and Instagram.

Twitter has previously released similar features for other worldwide sporting occasions, most notably for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil when it introduced its ‘hashflags’ feature. This automatically included a nation’s flag when a user posted while hashtagging a participating country’s three letter code.

This tool proved to be a success in terms of getting fans to engage on the site, as it became one of the most tweeted about events in history with over 672 million posts. As such, the question is whether Wimbledon fans will rally more success for the online company?
