TV Ads for Google, whatever next?

Posted on May 12, 2009

Google has never really been one for promoting itself via TV ad campaigns, for one thing it has never had to, however all that is about to change. Google announced last week that it would be running TV ads for its new browser, Google Chrome.

Unlike rivals Yahoo and Microsoft however, Google hasn’t spent a fortune on the advertisement campaign. The video was originally made by Google’s Japan office to show just how easy Google Chrome was to use. Then the video received some positive comments, which prompted more videos to be made and a YouTube channel to be created.

Google wrote on its official blog:

At the same time, we talked to our Google TV Ads team to see how we could show the video that our Japan team developed to a wider audience in a measurable way.

Using some of the results from our placement-targeted ads on the Google Content Network, we designed a Google TV Ads campaign which we hope will raise awareness of our browser, and also help us better understand how television can supplement our other online media campaigns.

Google Chrome has a market share of 1.42%, ahead of Opera but behind market leaders Microsoft with Internet Explorer and Firefox with 22.3%.
