Three tips for getting the most out of freelance writing services

Posted on March 20, 2012

Many businesses and websites use the services of freelance writers. Used properly, freelance services can be a great, cost effective way to get regular, new content on a website, helping with search engine optimisation (SEO) and building up a readership. Here are some tips to help maximise the benefits of working with freelancers:

1. Think about what the freelancer needs to know about your company. Freelance workers need to be able to quickly pick up the main aims of your business. It’s worth thinking about ways of summarising the main points you want to get across about your company or website, so that any freelance work will blend in with your own work

2. Consider industry specific terms. If you’re working in a specialised field, or one that uses very specific terms or abbreviations, make sure the freelancer is aware of this. A good freelance agency will match you up with a writer who has some experience of your field, and will deliver content in the terms expected by your readers

3. Ask for writing samples or agree on an initial number of articles. Reliable freelance agencies will be happy to show you samples of their writing, or to agree on an initial small brief for you to check that everything’s in order before you commence on a large project. Expectations and goals should be very carefully established at the outset, with clear deadlines, word counts and keyword frequencies agreed as part of the contract
