Snapchat adds new features

Posted on September 18, 2015

Photo messaging service Snapchat has launched a new update for its app that has social media in a craze. It has introduced its first in-app purchase option, as well as a set of filters.

For users in the U.S., there is the chance to make an in-app purchase. This involves the current feature that lets you replay one snap per day. The new update gives users the chance to purchase a further three replays for the humble price of $0.99 (roughly 64p). This could come in handy for those who are addicted to the app and receive a shedload of snaps that need to be seen more than once.

However, some may suggest that this is not worth it, as the message will still disappear after the snap has been replayed. It also means the service has taken a further step away from its USP of self-destructing messages after the introduction of ‘stories’ at the end of 2013, which last for 24 hours and can be seen multiple times within that time frame.

This is one way for the company to make money and still be able to keep the service free from advertising. In a statement released by the enterprise, it said that “time is money.”

As well as this, all users of the service who have recently updated their app can play with its new ‘lenses’ feature. This is a set of light-hearted filters that can enhance a user’s selfie. This feature works by enabling the selfie side of the camera and holding it down on your face before you take the photo. This gives you the chance to browse through the filters, which include rainbow vomiting, love-struck eyes, and another rather terrifying surprise lens.

Most of the new filters come with the instruction “open your mouth”, which will no doubt ensure that we keep seeing zombified youths gawking at their phones taking selfies with their mouths agape!
