Sky Movies to send physical copies of DVDs

Posted on April 3, 2014

As we move further into the digital age, many of us fear that the physical copy of the DVD will soon become extinct. However, Sky has revealed to online news providers that its new buy and keep movie store will not only provide digital copies of films, but also send physical copies out via the post.

Sky’s move seemingly reverses current processes, where a physical copy is bought with a digital code, in the hopes of satisfying customers who like to have a material copy for their collections.

At the present time, this service would only allow movie downloads to be accessed through a Sky box, meaning that digital copies would not be available for portable devices, such as mobiles and tablets, at the present time. This has been identified as a potential flaw in the company’s strategy, and one that it hopes to be able to amend in the near future.

Nicola Bamford, director of the Sky store, confirmed this by saying that the digital facility “was definitely on our roadmap”.

When asked about the selection of DVD format, the mass media firm outlined that it would be using the traditional DVD rather than a Blu-ray version because of its user base, rather than a rumoured cost issue.

This new service is believed to be launching in the coming weeks for customers who have a Sky+ HD box, and will have launch titles including The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Wolverine, and Turbo. The price range for these films will be somewhere between £7.99 and £13.99.
