Search Engine giant plans to develop router

Posted on August 20, 2015

Internet giant Google has recently announced that it has plans to develop its own wireless router solution, ‘OnHub’.

The California-based company, which has been hitting all of the headlines in recent weeks with its announcement of umbrella firm Alphabet, has unveiled plans to create its own Wi-Fi router that would minimise the problems encountered by other similar products.

OnHub has been identified as a router which is easy to set-up and manage, with the company intending on making it simple to troubleshoot any problems that may be encountered when surfing the web.

The design of the router would see a cylindrical device that can be controlled via an app, which will be available on both Android and iOS devices. The app will allow users to be able to connect their device to access information such as the speed of a connection to a particular device, as well as the ability to prioritise connections to certain gadgets.

To minimise the problems caused by underperforming routers, the app would help to troubleshoot issues and provide suggestions to the user to solve the problem.

The router itself has been designed to make people feel that they do not need to hide it from view, where performance may be affected. It is set to look similar to Echo, Amazon’s smart speaker, and give a better Wi-Fi penetration throughout the desired location, whether that is at home or in the office.

OnHub will support Bluetooth, and has been developed in partnership with TP-Link. The device is already available for pre-order in the US, but there has yet to be an announcement regarding its availability worldwide.
