Remembrance Sunday honoured by social media users

Users of Twitter and Facebook will be able to observe Remembrance Sunday thanks to Thunderclap, a social media site created by De-De, a product development studio. The British Legion is the first UK organisation to use Thunderclap in an attempt to encourage people to remember the fallen.

Thunderclap is an invention from the US which lets users send a message which is seen simultaneously by Twitter followers. A link to a Thunderclap page has been placed on the website of the British Legion so that users can click on the link and show their support. Followers of either Facebook or Twitter can support the cause. Once a Facebook or Twitter account has been authorised to send the message, it will be sent out to others via retweets and ‘likes’ reaching a record number of people. The head of Remembrance at the British Legion, Helen Hill said:

“We hope to create the largest ever show of online Remembrance by using the communicative power of social media to remind millions of Britons that they have a very personal opportunity to honour the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

The aim of thunderclap is to get a message heard by the masses. A message is Tweeted but may be missed by users, while Thunderclap has a rolling effect, getting the message out to far more people. If the concept is employed by businesses, SEO jobs may become more involved, with search engine optimisation taking a new direction. Companies all over the UK, including cities like Liverpool which utilise SEO will be keeping a look out for further developments.
