Olympic ban lifting offers freedom to SEO content creators

Posted on February 11, 2013

The lifting of a ban protecting the exclusive sponsors of London 2012 will be greeted which much relief by SEO writers, many of whom have been prevented from mentioning the Olympics since the summer.

The ban has been successfully repealed following a £2million payment from the British government to the British Olympic Committee.

In turn, the BOC will create a free licensing scheme for suppliers.

Many firms unable to pay the BOC were not allowed to mention their involvement in the delivery of the Games. Before the ban was clarified, there was even legal action threatened for small details.

This led to shops taking down Olympic-themed window displays and restaurants removing particular menu dishes.

Whilst mainstream journalism was not affected, it even resulted in content created for search engine optimisation not being able to mention the Olympics. With it being such a hotly trending topic throughout the summer, this would have affected readership and conversions significantly.

Talking about the deal struck to lift the ban, Maria Miller said:

“By lifting these restrictions we will be able to maximise the economic benefits from the Games.”

The secretary for culture, media and sport, continued:

“Now we have removed the barrier, companies can capitalise on the role they played at home and abroad by really selling their involvement in one of the biggest and most successful projects this country has ever put on.”

Whilst in place, the ban also prevented many firms that constructed the iconic arenas in the Olympic Park from promoting their work. This even prevented many designs being forwarded for consideration in industry awards.
