Oh, so you’re not a real writer…

When you are a professional writer who writes for a living and make a good living from it, it is surprising how often you may still hear these dismissive remarks that are often pronounced by those who don’t know what they are talking about. Who or what is a ‘real’ writer, someone who writes poetry or novels, or someone who writes for a living? In fact both are, as they are not mutually exclusive.

Someone who hones their skills, perhaps disciplining themselves to write 1,000 words a day, determined that whatever they write it is the best, is a real writer. They may have a great novel lurking in a drawer somewhere, but they write copy or articles for a living and enjoy it at the same time.

The growth of the internet has led to a great demand for article writers, content writers and copywriters for web sites. The switched on business persona knows that unless his site regularly publishes new content and blogs, it will not be picked up by potential customers who, more often than not, will simply ‘google’ for products or services.

This content is best supplied by professional, experienced writers who can produce top quality copy to a deadline. It is a great talent to be able to write quality articles that capture the interest or amuse, often having to include keywords or phrases, day in day out, with the ever present deadline looming. Compared to this, writing a fourteen line sonnet with ten or eleven syllables, expressing two successive phases of one thought is freedom itself!
