Google is proud to announce the acquisition of Zagat, a restaurant review service that rates an establishment based on service provided, quality of food and the décor. The search engine giant purchased the restaurant review business last week, in an attempt to boost local services. Zagat lists eating establishments by the type of cuisine, the area and other criterion.
According to Marissa Mayer, vice president of Google’s location, maps and local services commented:
“Zagat will be a cornerstone of our local offering”
She wrote in a blog, that people would have access to amazing experiences wherever they are in the world, thanks to Zagat.
Consumers are enthusiastic about Zagat as the reviews are user generated, giving honest opinions on their experiences in a restaurant. Mayer did say that she was enthusiastic about the pairing of Google Maps and Google Search with the review service, Zagat. Google would benefit from the respected brand and years of experience from Zagat. Google are targeting users of social media sites like FourSquare and others, by combining Google search, Maps with the ratings of Zagat.
The restaurant review service was founded in 1979, available in 13 countries and 100 cities from around the world. Further moves were made by Google to expand into the mobile Internet market after striking a deal with Motorola Mobility.
The expansion of Google into the restaurant review service could make some SEO jobs more difficult, as a creative SEO strategy becomes increasingly necessary for restaurant businesses.
