New search feature offered by Facebook

Posted on September 29, 2012

Facebook has launched a new search feature, letting users review the searches they have made on the social networking site. According to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, speaking at a conference for TechCrunch Disrupt, Facebook’s search capabilities are to be improved over the long term. This could be viewed as a challenge to Google’s search engine.

The new feature is part of the Facebook Activity Log which allows users to control their activity record on the social networking site. Users can review their activity on Facebook and over the next few weeks will be able to review a history of their searches, deleting any searches from their activity log. A user can only view their own activity log and are unable to view any other log. A spokesperson for Facebook stated that the information gained from the user’s activity log wouldn’t be utilised in any other capacity. He said:

“We don’t share details on our search or news feed systems.”

Zuckerberg appears to be looking to the future as he states that the search feature on Facebook may eventually be used to look for information on businesses and products. Currently, the search feature is mostly used to loom for other people who are using the social networking site. However, Facebook has “sponsored stories” which are recommendations from users, which could possibly lead to a future combination of search and recommendations on the site.

Google plays an integral role in SEO for businesses from Liverpool to LA, providing a number of useful features for users looking for information. As Facebook develops its search feature, companies may have to increase focus on the social site in their search engine optimisation strategy.
