NaNoWriMo challenges writers to produce a novel in November

    Posted on November 26, 2012

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is a popular challenge to write 50,000 words in the 30 days of November; about 1,700 words per day. The challenge, which has been running every year since 1999, was set up to encourage people to have a go at producing a short novel in a short space of time.

The idea of writing at speed has caught on, with over 250,000 people taking part last year. NaNoWriMo has also spawned similar challenges, including JulNoWriMo which takes place each July.

One important piece of advice to writers during these events is to try to ignore the ‘internal editor’ which usually makes us track our writing for quality and errors. The focus is on producing a lot of words and ideas, rather than scrutinizing the writing as it is produced. This inevitably means that a ‘novel’ written during NaNoWriMo could be years away from being of publishable quality.

Although writing for websites rarely involves any task as large as 50,000 words, many people who’ve tried producing business or news blogs will relate to the feeling of needing to produce a lot of writing at speed.

The difference here, of course, is that attention has to be paid to quality as well, since the internet can be unforgiving when it comes to business errors. For this reason, many people turn to the services of news content providers, who have the expertise in producing copy that’s well-written in addition to being ready on time.
