Mother furious as Britain First exploits daughter for poppy pic

Posted on November 18, 2015

A mother is reportedly “livid” after far-right political party Britain First used a picture of her 13-year-old daughter in a propaganda post on Facebook.

The picture shows two middle-aged men “protecting” the teenager, who is a member of the sea cadets and was dressed in uniform, along with another 12-year-old girl, as part of a day of action they called “Protect the Poppy”.

The mother says that she repeatedly asked Facebook to remove the picture, but was told that the social media giant could do nothing as her daughter was aged between 13 and 17. She said:

“As a parent, knowing an image of your child is being seen and shared around the country without your consent is frightening especially when it’s linked to a controversial group whose views you do not agree with.”

“Potentially they could make your child a target to the fools out there that exist.”

She also reached out to Britain First, but the group has not received a response. It is not the first time the picture stirred controversy. The group published the picture on Facebook on November 7th, but after being inundated with complaints from members of the public, took down a large version of it. However, a smaller version is still on its page.

Sea Cadets UK has also approached Facebook and Britain First with a request to remove the photo. Chairwoman Sue Dewey said:

“I was horrified, naturally, and very upset for the cadets because the exploitation of young people is something that we strive to avoid at all costs.”
