More employers recruit using social media

Posted on April 28, 2013

According to a survey recently conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management, an increasing number of employers are utilising the benefits of social networking sites to recruit job candidates. Social media websites are used by 77 per cent of employers who completed the SHRM survey.

The vice president of research for SHRM, Alexander Alonso, says that the work of HR professionals is changing, especially in recruiting, thanks to social media. In 2008, only 34 per cent of employers used social media to locate and communicate with potential job candidates, while 56 per cent of those surveyed used social networking sites for that purpose in 2011. The results of the survey revealed that the main reason for the use of social media in recruiting is to find those who may not otherwise apply for the posts. A further 67 per cent cite the increasing recognition of their company and employer branding.

The most likely website to be used by HR professionals for recruiting of employees is LinkedIn, with 94 per cent. The next most popular site is Facebook with 54 per cent. Social media is also used increasingly for internet marketing. Liverpool companies and other businesses in large cities often use social networking sites as part of their SEO campaign, to build their brand and increase recognition.

More than half of employers don’t have a policy in place to screen potential job candidates regarding social media. Using social networking sites may provide an insight into a person’s character and suitability to the post.
