Manic Monday joins the list of Christmas retail events

Posted on December 17, 2014

With a huge spike in online sales on the second Monday of December (8th), it could herald an emerging shopping trend during the festive period.

Already being dubbed ‘Manic Monday’, the day could soon be set to join the list of other big Christmas occasions for web-enabled retailers, such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Before the day, it was predicted by Experian and IMRG that online sales could hit £676.5m, which would equate to British consumers spending around £470,000 a minute. A significant proportion of this, it was estimated, would come from smart devices, such as tablets and mobiles.

With more and more website marketing specialists ensuring retail sites are mobile friendly, it was hoped that a greater number of UK shoppers than ever before could benefit from online offers.

This appears to be what has happened, with early figures from MetaPack indicating that there was a 25% rise in web purchases on Manic Monday, when compared to the same date in 2013. This, according to the company, made the day one of the key holiday peaks for retailers.

Not only this, but MetaPack believes it is indicative of an emerging consumer trend. According to one of its studies, which was conducted by Research Now, around 22% of British respondents were planning to carry out almost all of their Christmas shopping online. This was not just a fashion for the young, with 29% of those polled in the 35-44 age group planning to take mostly to the web.
