Jobseekers increasingly taking to Facebook

Posted on April 16, 2015

A study in Australia has found that more people looking for work Down Under are using Facebook than LinkedIn.

The research, which was conducted by recruitment company Randstad, surveyed around 12,000 Australians online. It was discovered that about one in three jobseekers were taking to social media in order to find their next role.

Of the people using social platforms to find work, only 45% were actively utilising professional networking site LinkedIn, while 61% were choosing to try their luck on Facebook.

Other social networks were also being used by the jobseekers, but not in such high numbers. While 32% were utilising Google+, only 15% took to Twitter and 11% tried to find a job on Instagram.

Although the research was conducted on the other side of the world, the study’s findings would still be of use to firms in Britain, as recruiters and job news providers may be able to better tailor the delivery of content to the correct audience.

Jacqui Elliott, a recruitment strategist at Australian HR services agency Watts Next, informed SmartCompany that more and more jobseekers were taking to a number of social channels to find work.

Elliot noted that they were not just trying to apply for roles, but were using the sites for research and to search for potential employers. As such, it would be important for businesses with an online presence to also make sure that their social pages are optimised for possible employees, as well as their audience, to source top talent.
