Internet giants collaborate to put an end to bad ads

Posted on June 18, 2012

A new initiative has been announced by a group called Stopbadware to stop the infiltration of bad advertisements online. The new initiative, called Ads Integrity Alliance, includes the Interactive Advertising Bureau, Google, Twitter, AOL and Facebook. The group is joining together to use their collective power to stop bad advertisements appearing online.

Stopbadware says that action is already being taken to stop adverts for products and services which are non-existent, but believes that even more can be done. Utilising the strength of the largest companies on the internet will hopefully stamp out the fake ads. The executive director of Stopbadware, Maxim Weinstein stated that the Ads Integrity Alliance would strengthen the existing attempts to make the internet a safer place for everyone. He said:

“No one can address Internet-scale threats on their own, so we’re bringing together industry leading organisations to tackle the problem collaboratively.”

Most of Google’s revenue comes from advertising, but the company has strict policies. In 2011, 800,000 advertisers had 130 million advertisements removed following violation of Google policies. The search engine giant is keen to clean up the internet. The manager of global public policy at Google, Eric Davis said:

“The Ads Integrity Alliance will serve as a forum for us to work together to protect users from bad ads and strengthen trust in the advertising ecosystem.”

The new policies and strict enforcement could have an effect on any remaining SEO campaigns using such ads in all areas of the world, from Liverpool to LA.
