Instagram introduces new photo editing features

Photo sharing app Instagram has released a new update that will allow users to enhance their photographs using an array of editing tools.

The update, known as Instagram 6.0, is expected to be available for users on Android and iOS within the upcoming days. This latest move will see those on the network have the ability to edit their photos by tapping a wrench icon that allows them to customise and adjust contrast, picture brightness, saturation, filter strength, highlights and more.

Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram, highlighted the fact that the changes mean that users no longer have to edit their photos elsewhere before uploading them to their Instagram newsfeeds. He stated:

“Now instead of using multiple apps to get your photos looking the way you want, you can just come to Instagram.”

The arrival of this update will come as a welcome one for users of the service, who have been calling for the app to introduce editing features to complement their wide selection of filters. The development has come at a time when the photo and video network was facing increasing competition from other social providers, such as Snapchat and Vine, who have started to offer video sharing services.

The photo sharing site was founded in 2010 and continues to show a rapid rate of growth, with it now boasting a user base of approximately 200 million active participants. Its popularity attracted attention from its rivals and, in 2012, social networking site Facebook purchased the company for a fee of $1bn (£599m).
