Photo-sharing app Instagram has released an update that gives users greater control over the videos they upload.
The Facebook-owned network last week rolled out version 4.1. Following the update, users can now upload videos they have taken using the standard video camera function of their mobile device.
Prior to the update, videos had to be taken using the in-app video feature, which limits footage time to 15 seconds but lets users choose from a number of a vintage filters.
Available now for both iOS and Android systems, Instagram 4.1 also implements auto straightening and – after requests from the Android community – makes the video function compatible with Android version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).
In a recent blog post, the new features brought in by the update were explained by Instagram.
When uploading videos taken outside of the Instagram app, users are still limited to 15 seconds; the app now lets users pick out the most important segment of the video by trimming it down. In keeping with Instagram’s Polaroid-style square images, users can manually crop the edges of their videos.
For brands engaging with customers using Instagram as part of a comprehensive internet marketing campaign, the increased freedom with video uploads could see new and exciting content reaching people’s news feeds.
With the iOS version of Instagram, in-app photos can now benefit from an auto straighten feature, which will automatically set images to be level. Users can also utilise a slider tool to rotate and adjust photos as they see fit.
