How much can pets earn on social media?

If you are a high-profile celebrity or social media influencer, then you can make millions on social media in a week, perhaps even in a day.

Earlier this summer, we looked at how much the top earners on photo and video sharing platform Instagram were making. This showed that the top earner was reality star Kylie Jenner, who would earn as much as $1m (£760,000) per post to her 111 million followers. The top 10 on this list would all earn a minimum of $500,000 per post.

But how does this compare to our four-legged friends?

Loni Edwards, who is the founder of animal talent management company The Dog Agency, has stated that pet influencers can also make a substantial amount per sponsored social media post.

Edwards explains that a pet with a follower base of 100,000 can earn a solid couple of hundred dollars per sponsored post. Should the pet have a follower base in the millions, then they could earn up to $15,000 a post.

Instagram Stories can also rake in the money, with a pet with a million followers having the ability to earn “several thousand dollars” per story post.

Instagram is perhaps the best platform to show off pets due to the non-verbal nature of posts being distributed, meaning that sponsored posts work better here than on the likes of YouTube and Facebook.

Who are the most followed pets on Instagram?

According to the Fast Company, the most followed pet on the social platform at the end of 2017 was Jiffpom, a US-based Pomeranian dog who boasted a follower base of seven million – a much higher figure than most people can attract. We checked Jiffpom’s follower count again and as of November 7th, it had risen to 8.9 million

Jiffpom is way ahead of the next most followed pet, which was Nala the cat, who also hails from the US. His follower base is half that of the top dog, with 3.5 million fans.

The top 10 most followed pets of 2017 are listed below:

1. Jiffpom (@jiffpom) – Pomeranian, USA – 7 million followers
2. Nala (@nala_cat) – Cat, USA – 3.5 million followers
3. Doug the Pug (@itsdougthepug) – Pug, USA – 3 million followers
4. Shibainu Maru (@marutaro) – Shiba Inu, Japan – 2.6 million followers
5. Grumpy Cat (@realgrumpycat) – Cat, USA – 2.4 million followers
6. Marnie the Dog (@marniethedog) – Shih Tzu, USA – 2.1 million followers
7. Tuna (@tunameltsmyheart) – Chiweenie, USA – 1.9 million followers
8. JuniperFoxx (@juniperfoxx) – Fox, USA – 1.9 million followers
9. Lil Bub (@iamlilbub) – Cat, USA – 1.6 million followers
10. Loki (@loki) – Husky, USA – 1.6 million followers

A check of the follower counts at the time of writing showed that they had not really changed too much, with Jiffpom extending his lead, and Juniper the fox attracting 0.6 million followers over the year, which would see him move up to number five ahead of Grumpy Cat.

So, if you have an cute cat, dope dog or even a brilliant bird, then social media could be a good way to earn a bit of extra income should their Instagram profiles go viral.
