Minister of Defence, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg has resigned from his position in Germany, after it was discovered that he copied a large proportion of his 2006 doctorate thesis. A Bremen university professor of law used the Internet to review the thesis, discovering that many parts had been copied word for word from various sources. Although Chancellor Angela Merkel had made the decision to stand by the minister, Guttenberg commented on his decision to resign:
“I was always ready to fight, but have to admit I have reached the limit of my strength.”
Angela Merkel believes that the minister will be able to return to his work with the government, although his allies in the world of politics started to disband as the pressure continued to mount. Many objected to Guttenberg remaining in his ministerial position, which is based on trust, with 51,500 academics signing a letter which objected to him remaining with the government.
For owners of online businesses, it can be a temptation to steal portions of other people’s work to create content for your website, especially if the English language is a problem or writing isn’t a strong point. Content outsourcing ensures that all web content is fresh and original, building trust with website visitors. As the German minister has discovered, betrayal of trust will lose the support of colleagues and friends. For an online business, plagiarism will lose not only website traffic, but also the search engines, as they take steps to weed out websites with duplicated content. A reputable search engine optimisation copywriting service will produce original content that creates trust.
