Have a clear brief and keywords in mind for your content

Posted on October 11, 2009

Before you begin writing any content for your website it’s important to have a strategy, a plan and a brief. There’s no point setting off writing articles for your own website without a strategy or you’ll be wasting your efforts and won’t improve the SEO of your website.

Before you begin, think about the keywords that you want to rank for. If you’re not sure, look at your competitors’ websites and see what keywords they are using in their page titles, on their website and in links. These are probably the sorts of keywords that you want to be optimising for yourself.

Then you should note these keywords down and refer to them whenever you write articles. Also, think about what aspect of your business that you want to prioritise online. It could be a new part of your business, the most profitable part or maybe a part that needs a boost. Target a large portion of your content around this aspect and continually refer to it and link to the relevant sections of your website, using your keywords in the articles.

Something you should also do is monitor your rankings in Google for these keywords. There’s no point writing content blind without knowing whether it’s working for you or not.
