Grammar is important on dating sites

Posted on October 13, 2015

According to an article from The Wall Street Journal, the correct use of grammar is a sought-after quality on online dating sites, with it coming second only to personal hygiene.

This observation comes from a survey by the dating site match.com, which found that the vast majority of people (96% of women and 91% of men) look for personal hygiene in a potential partner. Good grammar was the next most popular attribute with 88% of women and 75% of men, beating out characteristics such as confidence and teeth. A similar trend was also found in an analysis of the dating site eHarmony by Grammarly. This revealed that when male profiles contained spelling errors, they were 14% less likely to receive a positive response. Females, however, seemed to be unaffected by this phenomenon.

It appears that better writing skills enable people to stand out on dating sites. In contrast, the use of poor grammar and spelling, as well as modern abbreviations, is often interpreted as a lack of care and effort. According to Jason Tan, CEO of Sift Science, certain typos are also connected with fraudulent activity.

Despite the informal use of English through texting and social media, many people are judging others based on their grammar and spelling, and this also applies to commercial websites such as online news providers. Hosting a website news feed with a constant flow of fresh content is a great way to improve search rankings, but correct grammar and spelling are needed to ensure maximal effectiveness.
