Google’s 2012 Zeitgeist reveals Whitney Houston at top of list

Posted on December 14, 2012

Google Zeitgeist reveals the most searched for terms each year, and this year the most searched for term was Whitney Houston. Joining Whitney at the top of the list are Kate Middleton and Gangnam Style. Rather than measure the largest number of searches, Zeitgeist measures the search terms which have fastest growth.

Some of the most popular search terms of 2012 include NatWest Online which went down and left customers without access to their accounts, missing Welsh five year old April Jones, the launch of Apple products, royal family, sport and celebrities. The search term which experienced the fastest growth in the UK was Euro 2012. Gangnam Style also appeared in the top ten UK searches, with the YouTube video reaching almost one billion views in the first four months of being online, becoming the biggest hit for YouTube.

According to Dr Grant Blank from the Oxford Internet Institute, Zeitgeist can only reflect the trends of the online community, with up to 25 per cent of the UK not having access to the internet. Figures for adult content were not included, as comScore apply safety filters to Zeitgeist so that keywords for adult content are excluded. Data shows that Google has a 90.2 per cent market share of searches which is likely to continue. This is just one reason why Google plays a huge role in search engine optimisation, with the SEO campaign of online companies all over the UK, including Liverpool utilising the search engine company.
