Google trials outdoor search facility

Posted on November 7, 2013

Google has unveiled a series of local information hubs all over the UK’s capital.

Together with experts at R/GA London – which counts big brands like Nike and O2 as clients – the Californian search giant has launched a trial scheme for a project called Google Outside.

Bringing the company’s vastly successful search tool to the city streets, Google Outside screens – of which there are more than 160 – give people easy access to a wealth of local data, such as weather forecasts, travel news and details of nearby attractions.

Users can see, for instance, details of any delays with the Underground trains, in which case the Google Outside journey planner will suggest a series of alternative modes of transport.

The weather is also expected to influence the information users are presented with. During spells of wet weather, for example, the facility will promote indoor activities. Businesses across the capital are likely to ramp up their website marketing efforts to increase their search visibility and attract tourists.

Speaking to The Drum, a spokesperson from Google said:

“We are currently testing a new way of helping users get the most out of London, as we want people to enjoy Google wherever they are. The Google search app has so many great features that people can use outdoors, and we thought various spots in London would be give people a chance to experience it for a while.”

Specialists at R/GA London worked alongside Google on the pilot scheme’s strategy and concept, as well as the technology behind the facility.
