Google tests service cost estimates in search

Search giant Google recently confirmed it is testing out a new feature to provide users with cost estimates in a local panel when they make a search query.

These estimates are for having specific jobs carried out in your home, which are specific to your local area and based on information from Homewyse.

A Twitter user posted a screenshot of what this new panel will look like, with the example of a roof repair in New Jersey’s Hackensack:

As the screenshot shows, users are presented with an indication of the average price of the job, along with a list of companies that provide that service.

Talking to Search Engine Land, a spokesperson for Google confirmed the testing of the feature and said:

“We strive to surface relevant information that helps people make decisions. As part of that, we’re running an experiment with Homewyse to surface local cost estimates in local results when users search for select types of home services on Google.”

While many may assume that the companies listed in the panel will be paid-for listings, tradespeople will be happy to know that they are, in fact, entirely organic results. Therefore, if the feature is rolled out in the UK once it has completed its testing phase, companies that provide the services being displayed in these panels may want to check whether their prices reflect those being displayed in these estimates in order to attract customers.

It must be noted, however, that Search Engine Land’s Barry Schwartz, who is of the Hackensack area, stated that the estimates in the Twitter screenshot appear to be “incredibly low”. Presumably, however, the estimates would represent a true reflection of prices in a local area if testing is successful.

If this feature is to be rolled out, businesses that provide home services should ensure they have an online presence, including a website and a Google My Business listing, to make an appearance on the local panel.
