Google Street View moves inside your business

Posted on November 2, 2011

Google Street View is to move inside specified businesses and take photos of the interior, so customers can decide whether they’d like to visit or not. The initial pilot of Street View was started back in April 2010, and May saw the announcement of plans to take 360-degree Business Photos, with professional photographers from Google visiting business premises to capture professional images to appear on the Places Page.

Advanced technology allows a user to walk around the business premises using the arrows, before deciding whether they would like to visit the business in person, for instance a shop or restaurant. It is possible for a business to upload its own photos, although a Google photographer is available. Currently, Google’s working on the organisation of photo shoots in the United States, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, France and now the UK. The more popular type of business, one which is more commonly searched for, will be featured; the list includes restaurants, retail stores, gyms, hotels and salons.

Businesses can apply online to take part in this new part of Google Street View. The images will be owned by Google, but business can ask for any to be removed. Security has been a concern for some business owners, although Google insist that viewers will only see the same images they would be presented with by visiting the store in person.

This latest development by the search engine giant could be beneficial to businesses in Liverpool and other areas of the UK, as with most of Google’s technology, so results will be closely monitored for any SEO benefits.
