Google reinforces urgent need for strong broadband in UK

A Google representative has added his support to UK online businesses that urgently need a superfast broadband and improved mobile coverage in order to succeed.

Matt Brittin spoke out at the Digital London event, pointing out that improved internet access helps businesses gain an online presence, while making it possible for people to shop online and therefore, increase the GDP of the UK.

Matt Brittin, the vice president of Google in Northern and central Europe, said that although the government in the UK realises just how important it is to improve the mobile and broadband coverage, the funding still poses significant problems. He said:

“We see the pace of mobile growth as absolutely transformational, not just for business but to help people out of poverty. I think government understand how important it is when you talk to them; the challenge is getting it funded and getting it out fast.”

Access to the internet in different areas of the country is still a major problem. Although main cities such as London enjoy the benefits of superfast broadband speeds, areas which are close to the cities may not have that advantage. Brittin also believes that seven percent of the UK GDP is contributed by online business, and 60 percent is from online consumers.

Brittin further pointed out that UK online shoppers spend more per head than other countries. This creates huge competition between online companies, with Google playing an integral role in the SEO campaign of any business, whether in Liverpool UK or elsewhere in Europe.
